How to ask for an itemized bill
Whether a hospital must provide one, and how quickly, depends on your state. Most will provide one when you ask.
- Call the hospital billing office (the number is on your bill) and ask for an itemized bill — a line-by-line list, not a summary.
- Ask that it include dates of service, billing codes (CPT, HCPCS, or revenue codes), quantities, and the price of each item.
- Have your account number, the patient's name, date of birth, and dates of the hospital stay ready.
- If you're handling a parent's bill, ask what signed permission form the hospital needs from them.
- Ask the billing office to put the account on hold while you review it, and ask how long the hold lasts.
- Ask for a copy of the hospital's financial assistance (charity care) policy and application.
- If you have insurance, get the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurer to compare against the bill.
- Write down the date, the person you spoke with, and what they said. Follow up in writing if you can.
